For three mornings in late July, Robin Roberts Stadium wasn’t just home to Prospect League baseball—it became a classroom where the next generation of players learned the fundamentals of America’s pastime.
From Wednesday, July 22 through Friday, July 24, the Springfield Lucky Horseshoes welcomed dozens of young athletes, ranging in age from approximately 6 to 10 years old, for their annual Youth Baseball Camp. Running each day from 9 a.m. to noon, the three-day camp focused on developing baseball fundamentals while creating an enjoyable experience for every child in attendance.
Throughout the camp, participants rotated through a variety of instructional stations led by Lucky Horseshoes players, who served as coaches and mentors for the young athletes. Campers worked on nearly every aspect of the game, including fielding ground balls, proper throwing mechanics, hitting fundamentals using batting tees and soft toss drills, and learning the correct way to run the bases.
While skill development remained a priority, so did making the game fun.
Each morning concluded with games of Wiffle Ball and Kickball, giving campers an opportunity to put their new skills into action, compete with friends, and simply enjoy being on the field with the Lucky Horseshoes players.
For Lucky Horseshoes pitcher Liam Shackleton, helping young players discover a love for baseball was one of the most rewarding parts of the camp.
“I really hope that they find baseball more fun and try to get a little bit better at it at the same time,” Shackleton said.
Shackleton spent much of the camp working with campers on defensive fundamentals, helping teach proper fielding techniques while encouraging confidence and repetition.
Behind the plate, catcher Lawson Alwan emphasized that the camp offered much more than baseball instruction.
“They get to come out here and make new friends, they get to meet us, they get to learn from us for a little bit. You know… little kids always look up to the older guys,” Alwan said.
That connection between the Prospect League players and the campers became one of the defining aspects of the event. Whether demonstrating proper mechanics, offering encouragement after a drill, or joining in the afternoon games, the Horseshoes players remained engaged throughout the camp, creating an environment where learning and fun went hand in hand.
For many of the campers, spending three days alongside collegiate baseball players provided an experience they won’t soon forget. Beyond improving their throwing, hitting, and fielding skills, the young athletes gained confidence, formed new friendships, and created lasting memories at the ballpark.
Community events like the Lucky Horseshoes Youth Baseball Camp continue to strengthen the bond between the organization and local families while helping grow the game of baseball in the Springfield area. As another successful summer camp came to a close, the smiles on the campers’ faces served as a reminder that the impact of the event extends well beyond the final day—helping inspire the next generation of baseball players one lesson, one drill, and one game at a time.
