With the regular season now just a few weeks away, the Taylorville Tornadoes and Pana Panthers took another important step toward the 2026 football season by meeting for a summer 7-on-7 scrimmage.
While the scoreboard takes a backseat during the offseason, events like these provide coaches and players with valuable opportunities to evaluate progress, build chemistry, and gain experience against an unfamiliar opponent before the games begin to count.
For both programs, the scrimmage served as a chance to sharpen offensive timing, defensive communication, and overall execution while facing different schemes and personnel than they see every day in practice. Coaches were able to evaluate quarterbacks, receivers, defensive backs, and overall team communication in a competitive environment while continuing preparations for the start of fall camp.
Taylorville head coach Coach Odam emphasized that competing against another school provides an entirely different atmosphere than practicing against teammates.
“I think for the other coach, this might be the first chance of getting together with a different team and seeing someone in a different jersey, different helmet, and really ramping up that urgency. Obviously we wanna control the tempo and make sure nobody gets injured, but when you go against somebody else other than your own guys, it’s a little bit different energy. So we just wanna see how our guys react to it, film everything, and make some decisions from there.”
That mindset reflects the primary objective of summer scrimmages. Rather than focusing on wins or losses, coaching staffs use the live repetitions to evaluate personnel, identify strengths and weaknesses, and determine which adjustments need to be made before the regular season kicks off.
The Tornadoes and Panthers both return to practice with valuable film and firsthand experience against outside competition, giving each coaching staff another opportunity to assess player development and fine-tune their game plans over the coming weeks.
With approximately a month remaining before opening night, both Taylorville and Pana continue to build toward what they hope will be successful 2026 campaigns. While Friday’s 7-on-7 scrimmage won’t appear in the standings, it provided another important benchmark in each team’s journey toward the regular season.
