A five-run third inning and a dominant performance from the bullpen propelled the Decatur Bean Ballers to a convincing 9-2 victory over the Jackson Rockabillys on Tuesday night.
After falling behind early, Decatur responded with an offensive surge and never looked back, collecting 10 hits while taking advantage of several Jackson defensive miscues to secure the win.
The Rockabillys struck first in the opening inning when Ayden Makarus delivered an RBI single up the middle, scoring Xavier Hatfield and giving Jackson a 1-0 lead.
Jackson added another run in the third inning. Zach Robinson crossed the plate on a fielder’s choice that was aided by a Decatur throwing error, extending the Rockabillys’ advantage to 2-0.
The Bean Ballers quickly answered in the bottom half of the inning with their biggest rally of the night.
Grayson Roberson got Decatur on the board with an RBI double to left-center field, scoring Jackson Snitko and cutting the deficit to 2-1. Moments later, Caleb Crider delivered the game’s turning point, lining a two-run single up the middle that brought home Moises Febrillet and Roberson, giving Decatur its first lead of the night at 3-2.
The inning continued as Decatur capitalized on Jackson defensive mistakes. Carder Reich scored on an error by the third baseman, while Crider also crossed the plate during the sequence, pushing the Bean Ballers’ lead to 5-2 before the inning came to a close.
Decatur added to its cushion in the fifth.
Trevor Geis scored on a wild pitch to make it 6-2, and later in the inning Misael Maldonado lined an RBI single to center field, bringing home Gage Reynolds. The Bean Ballers weren’t finished, as Brandon Abernathy and Maldonado both scored on another Jackson error, extending the lead to 9-2.
With the offense providing plenty of support, Decatur’s pitching staff took control.
Starter Parker Phillis battled through three innings, allowing two runs while striking out two. Noah Shapo was outstanding in relief, earning the victory after tossing four scoreless innings. The right-hander surrendered just two hits while striking out five and keeping the Rockabillys off the scoreboard during the middle innings.
Bruno Banuelos closed out the final two frames, allowing no runs and striking out three to seal the victory.
At the plate, Roberson led the Bean Ballers with a 2-for-4 performance that included a double, an RBI, and two runs scored. Crider also turned in a strong night, finishing with three hits and two RBIs while scoring once.
Maldonado added an RBI and scored twice, while Abernathy, Snitko, Febrillet, Geis, and Reich all crossed the plate as Decatur’s lineup produced offense throughout the order.
The Bean Ballers finished with nine runs on 10 hits, while their pitching staff combined for 10 strikeouts and limited Jackson to just two runs on three hits.
After spotting the Rockabillys an early lead, Decatur responded with timely hitting, aggressive baserunning, and strong relief pitching to earn a decisive 9-2 road victory.
