A dominant pitching matchup took center stage Monday as Olympia scratched across the game’s only run in the fourth inning to defeat Monticello 1-0.
Both teams traded zeros early behind strong performances in the circle. Olympia’s Gabby Frye and Monticello’s Cassidee Stoffel kept hitters off balance throughout the night, combining for 20 strikeouts in a tightly contested battle.
The Spartans finally broke through in the top of the fourth inning. Lucy Prestegaard reached and later scored when Finley Hoffman delivered a line-drive single to right field, giving Olympia the 1-0 advantage. Teagan Haning advanced to third on the play as the Spartans capitalized on the scoring opportunity.
That would be all Frye needed. The Olympia ace tossed a complete-game shutout, allowing just four hits while striking out 10 batters and not issuing a walk.
Stoffel was impressive in defeat for Monticello, matching Frye inning for inning for much of the contest. She struck out 10 and allowed just one earned run over seven innings.
Olympia finished with eight hits, led by Brinklee Burns with two. Hoffman added the game-winning RBI, while Prestegaard, Kennadie Finchum, Mikkenna Hill, Addi Minder, and Frye all recorded hits.
Monticello managed four hits in the loss, with Sadie Walsh, Reese Stiger, Thea Key, and Stoffel each collecting one hit.
