Newton jumped out early and did just enough late to hold off a push from Shelbyville, securing a 7-5 victory in a game that featured timely hitting and aggressive baserunning.
Newton wasted no time setting the tone in the first inning. Quincy Fulton created chaos on the bases, swiping third and eventually scoring on a catcher error to open the scoring. Drake Wolf followed with an RBI single to make it 2-0, and Reed Tharp later added another RBI knock to extend the lead to 2-0.
Shelbyville answered in the bottom half of the inning, as Stirett delivered an RBI single to cut the deficit to 2-1.
The Eagles broke things open in the second. Wolf came through again in a big spot, ripping a bases-clearing double to center that plated three runs and pushed Newton’s lead to 5-1.
Newton added another in the fourth on a sacrifice fly from David Ferguson, making it 6-1, but Shelbyville refused to go away. The Rams rallied in the bottom of the fourth, highlighted by a two-run double from Ulner and a two-run single from Murphy, trimming the lead to 6-5 and shifting the momentum.
In the sixth, Newton found an insurance run in unconventional fashion. With runners moving on the bases, a throwing error by the catcher allowed Drake Wolf to come home, extending the lead to 7-5.
From there, Newton’s pitching settled in and shut the door, stranding Shelbyville and preserving the two-run win.
