At CEFCU Arena on Thursday, March 5, the Mt. Pulaski Lady Hilltoppers battled the Brown County Hornets in a thrilling Class 1A State Semifinal matchup. With a trip to the championship on the line, both teams left everything on the court in a game that ultimately required overtime.
Thanks to a clutch three-pointer in the final seconds of regulation, Mt. Pulaski forced overtime and went on to defeat Brown County 47–40, advancing to the State Championship game.
First Half
Brown County controlled the opening tip and quickly pushed the tempo on offense, scoring the first points of the game. Mt. Pulaski responded almost immediately with a basket of their own, setting the tone for what would become one of the most competitive games of the day.
The Lady Hilltoppers built momentum in the first quarter, establishing an early lead. Brown County stayed within striking distance, answering with several key baskets of their own to keep the pressure on. By the end of the opening quarter, Mt. Pulaski held a 12–8 lead.
The second quarter turned into a physical battle on both ends of the floor. Rebounds were fiercely contested, and strong defensive play from both teams led to several trips to the free-throw line. Despite the Hornets’ efforts, Mt. Pulaski’s defense held firm, allowing the Hilltoppers to maintain their advantage.
At halftime, Mt. Pulaski led 22–17.
Second Half
Coming out of halftime, the Hilltoppers looked determined to maintain their intensity, but the Hornets were ready to fight back. Brown County increased its defensive pressure and began chipping away at the lead during the third quarter, keeping the game close.
Mt. Pulaski managed to hold onto the lead entering the fourth quarter, but Brown County’s persistence eventually paid off.
With just over a minute remaining in regulation, the Hornets surged ahead after strong defensive stops and key free throws. After converting from the line, Brown County held a 38–35 lead, putting Mt. Pulaski on the brink of elimination.
But the Hilltoppers weren’t finished yet.
With 9.9 seconds remaining, Alyson Murphy delivered the biggest shot of the night, drilling a clutch three-pointer to tie the game at 38–38 and send the semifinal matchup into overtime.
Overtime
Momentum shifted quickly in overtime.
Mt. Pulaski returned to the disciplined play that carried them through the first half. Strong rebounding, solid defense, and timely scoring allowed the Hilltoppers to regain control of the game.
Brown County struggled to keep pace in the extra period as Mt. Pulaski steadily pulled away.
When the final buzzer sounded, the Lady Hilltoppers secured a 47–40 victory, punching their ticket to the Class 1A Girls State Championship.

Mt. Pulaski will return to CEFCU Arena on Saturday at 10:00 AM, where the Lady Hilltoppers will compete for the Class 1A Girls State Championship.
