Shelbyville Battles Past Tri-County in Three-Set Victory

The Shelbyville Rams showed their ability to respond to adversity Monday night, bouncing back from a second-set loss to defeat Tri-County in three sets, 25-18, 18-25, 25-16.

Shelbyville opened the night on the right foot, taking the first set 25-18 before Tri-County answered with an identical seven-point margin in the second, 25-18. With the match hanging in the balance, the Rams regained control in the deciding third set and closed out the night with a convincing 25-16 victory.

The win improved Shelbyville to 2-2 on the season and featured contributions throughout head coach Lindsay Krumreich’s lineup.

A major part of Shelbyville’s success came from its back-row defense. Debra Jones turned in a standout performance with a team-high 31 digs, helping the Rams extend rallies and create additional opportunities offensively. Jones also recorded three aces, seven points and three assists.

Brynly Rice-Delgado provided another strong defensive presence with 18 digs while contributing four kills and an assist.

Offensively, Shelbyville used a balanced attack rather than relying on one player. Meiya Thompson and Stella Beavers led the Rams with six kills apiece, while Avery Bland followed with five. Rice-Delgado and Cambrie Lebon each contributed four kills, and Brielle Ko added three kills and a block.

The Rams also benefited from strong distribution by Taya Wiley and Ava Corley. Wiley finished with a team-high 12 assists to go along with three aces, nine points, two kills and five digs. Corley recorded 11 assists, seven digs, four points, an ace and a kill.

Shelbyville’s serving helped provide another dimension. Wiley and Jones each registered three aces, while Madie Mitchell added two. Corley and Bland each contributed an ace as the Rams consistently found ways to generate pressure from the service line.

After Shelbyville’s 25-18 victory in the opener, Tri-County refused to go quietly. The Titans responded in the second set and turned the score around, winning 25-18 to force the deciding frame.

That response presented Shelbyville with its biggest challenge of the night, but the Rams answered emphatically.

Shelbyville pulled back in front during the third set and didn’t allow the second-set setback to derail the match. The Rams eventually created enough separation to finish off Tri-County, 25-16, sealing the three-set victory.

The result was an important bounce-back performance for Shelbyville after falling to Nokomis in straight sets in its previous match. Earlier in the season, the Rams also earned a straight-set victory over Mattoon behind many of the same contributors who played key roles Monday night.

For Shelbyville, Monday’s victory showcased both balance and resilience. With Jones and Rice-Delgado anchoring the defense, Wiley and Corley directing the offense and multiple hitters contributing at the net, the Rams found the complete team effort they needed to come away with the win.

Shelbyville will now turn its attention to its next match, scheduled for Wednesday, Sept. 10, at Monticello.
