The expectations surrounding Pawnee football haven’t changed.
After advancing to the IHSA 8-Man Football Quarterfinals a season ago, the Indians return with another experienced group hungry to take the next step. But inside the locker room, head coach Josh Talley isn’t talking about playoff brackets or championships.
Instead, the message is simple.
Win the day.
“The past two classes kind of set the standard for what we want Pawnee football to be,” Talley said. “Our seniors came up with the idea of winning the day. We focus on the process rather than the product. If our daily habits are where they need to be, the scoreboard will take care of itself.”
That philosophy has become the foundation of the program, and it’s one the Indians believe can carry them even further this fall.
Building the Culture
Senior leader Hudson Wort believes this year’s team has all the pieces to continue the culture that has been built over the past several seasons.
“This group is really special,” Wort said. “The first day of summer lifting, pretty much everybody showed up at 6:30 in the morning. That’s special. We’re just looking to build that culture and continue the success.”
Talley has seen that commitment firsthand.
“They’ve been working hard, and they’ve been coming together as a team,” he said. “They’re a very coachable group, and that’s probably been the biggest growth we’ve seen this summer.”
Winning Up Front
The biggest point of emphasis throughout preseason camp has been physicality.
Senior lineman Gavin Hutchings says that’s where Pawnee football starts.
“The biggest thing is physicality,” Hutchings said. “That’s what wins football games.”
Talley agrees.
Looking back at last season, he believes improving in the trenches is the key to taking another step forward.
“When we looked back at the games we lost, we agreed we lost those games up front on both sides of the ball,” Talley said. “Playing with better technique and better physicality is one big thing we’re looking to improve.”
A Balanced Offense
Senior Lucas Seiz believes the Indians have plenty of weapons this season.
While the passing game returns with confidence, Pawnee has spent much of the offseason developing a stronger rushing attack.
“We’ve been really focused on our run game,” Seiz said. “We’re confident in our pass game, but we know if we can get Hudson, Luke and Caleb the ball in space, we can do a lot of good things.”
The Indians believe becoming more balanced offensively will make them even more difficult to defend throughout the season.
More Than Football
The culture at Pawnee extends beyond Friday nights.
Players repeatedly praised the coaching staff for developing them as people as much as athletes.
“Coach Talley’s one of the best coaches I’ve ever had,” Seiz said. “He pushes us, expects great things from us, but he’s also there to help you with more than just football.”
Talley also credited his staff, including new coaches and former players who have returned to mentor the next generation of Indians.
Ready for the Next Step
Pawnee knows expectations are high after another successful season.
The Indians believe they have the leadership, experience and work ethic to compete with anyone in the IHSA 8-Man ranks.
But before thinking about another playoff run, the focus remains on the team’s daily habits.
For Josh Talley and the Indians, success isn’t built on preseason hype.
It’s built by winning the day.
If Pawnee continues to embrace that mindset, the Indians believe another memorable run through the IHSA 8-Man Football Playoffs is well within reach.
